Blog 3 - Bethany Hufford

In my previous blog, I discussed the obvious design of IU's Umail login page. I think the best way to gain insight on any improvements to be made would be to survey users. A quick survey could reach a very large number of students and faculty that use umail. A website such as SurveyMonkey could help find out if students are satisfied with the way the website works and if there are any changes they would like to see.

  1. Surveying is a useful technique to understand overall responses from a large amount of users, for example, whether they find the website satisfying or which features they like the most. However, if you want to focus on improving specific features of the website, for example login page, shadowing or contextual inquiry might be also a good idea to understand how actually people interact with the site. At the same time, if you are considering survey, please try to think about which kinds of questions you want to ask. Even for the same questions, providing different options might influence the validity of user responses.
